Queens Writes Weekend: Queens Central Library on Saturday, May 21, 2017

Sherese Francis is the Site Captain for Rainbow Haikus Part 2, taking place at Queens Central Library on Saturday, May 21, from 1:00 to 3:30 p.m.

If you aren't able to make it to the first Rainbow Haikus event at Lewis Latimer House Museum on May 20th, here is your second chance to join me! Part 2 of Rainbow Haikus will take place the following day at Queens Central Library (Area A on Lower Level C) in Jamaica, Queens. Not only do you get to read and write haiku, but also be a part of the first Queens Writes Weekend site in Jamaica! Hooray!

As with the Lewis Latimer House event, we will be writing haiku about the earth, nature, spring, and the environment. However, this time around, we will be combining haiku with found poetry, which is a type of poetry where one takes words and phrases from other writing and "reweaves" them into new poetry. There will be examples of haiku and haiku variations from poets like Ezra Pound and Sonia Sanchez, copies of and my friend Yasmine Lancaster's and my haiku chapbooks, and a list of words to stir your minds present. I encourage you to share what you wrote afterwards and possibly submit it to Newtown Literary for an upcoming issue.
