This past week was a busy one at Newtown Literary, as we attended the New York City Poetry Festival, getting out the word about what's happening in Queens, and held a reading at Jackson Heights-favorite Espresso 77.

Saturday, July 29, and Sunday, July 30, the Newtown Literary crew headed to Governors Island to the New York City Poetry Festival. Both days, we had a table right in the middle of the festival, making contact with poets in and out of Queens to let them know what's happening in our great borough. On Sunday, we had a reading at the famed Algonquin stage, hosted by Poetry Editor Sokunthary Svay and featuring Amy Losak, Stella Apostolidis, and Allia Abudullah-Matta.

On Tuesday, August 1, Espresso 77 hosted Prose Night in Jackson Heights. Prose Editor Joe Okonkwo emceed the evening, featuring contributors Will Schwartz, Jackie de Dios, Bea Cohen, and Russell Ricard.

We don't have any more events this summer, but we are hard at work putting together issue 11 and planning great events from the fall, including more free writing classes for adults and kids, open mics, professional development panels, and, of course, readings featuring our wonderful contributors.

Both of these events were funded in part by Poets & Writers through public funds from the New York City Department of Cultural Affairs, in partnership with the City Council.
