It is either a testament to the burgeoning literary scene in the underserved outer boroughs, or an indication of the untapped potential in Queens were that almost 40 kids (and their supportive parents) made time on a Saturday afternoon to attend a poetry workshop for 8-12 year olds at the Jackson Heights branch of the Queens Public Library.

Newtown Literary provides free writing workshops for adults and kids that focus on a particular theme or craft technique. This workshop, led by NL editor Jackie Sherbow, analyzed simile and metaphor and examined the relationship between words and ideas.

Not only were the participants active and engaged, they were eager to share opinions and their work at the end of the 2 hour session. The future of writing and the arts in Queens seems assured.
